Play Therapy

Play therapy is a way of being with a child that honors their unique developmental level and looks for ways of helping in the “language” of the child – play.  (source)

Children naturally communicate through play: exploring their world, their questions and fears, and imagining different possibilities. Often, adults expect children to communicate in ways that are natural for adults, but less natural for children.   By inviting children to play in session, I aim to create a safe environment where they feel safe enough to express themselves, and make sense of their experiences.

Play therapy sessions can be one-on-one with your child and myself, parent-child or family sessions, or a combination of both.  We will work together to figure out the best option for your family.

Play therapy helps children:

  • Become more responsible for behaviors and develop more successful strategies.

  • Develop new and creative solutions to problems.

  • Develop respect and acceptance of self and others.

  • Learn to experience and express emotion.

  • Cultivate empathy and respect for thoughts and feelings of others.

  • Learn new social skills and relational skills with family.

  • Develop self-efficacy and thus a better assuredness about their abilities.
